Step by Step

Located in the heart of the Old Sacramento Waterfront, the Sacramento History Museum offers a journey back in time through the history of the city and its impact on the evolution of California. The museum is housed in a reproduction of the 1854 City Hall and Water Works building, which originally housed the municipal offices, fire service, jail and police courthouse.

The tour begins with a look at the indigenous peoples of the region, including the Nisenan, Miwok, Patwin and Maidu, who inhabited this land for thousands of years before the arrival of European settlers. Through interactive exhibits and videos, you'll learn about how these communities lived, their traditions and their connection to the land.

The museum also highlights Sacramento's transformation during the Gold Rush, when thousands of people arrived in search of fortune, giving rise to a rapidly growing city. Discover the stories of entrepreneurs, immigrants and adventurers who contributed to the development of California's capital and their role in the agricultural and transportation boom.

Plus, weather permitting, you can take part in a gold panning demonstration, a perfect activity for children and adults who want to experience what it was like to pan for gold in the 19th century.

Overall I loved it: good historical content, modern exhibition, and the Old Sacramento setting adds a lot to it.

The gold panning demonstration was fun, especially for the children. It is only done "weather permitting", which created some uncertainty for me when planning the visit.

I liked that it was affordable, clean and had modern screens. If I return to Sacramento, I would definitely come back.
