Although there’s plenty to see and do in Madrid, four days are enough to take in the essentials. Here’s a practical, well-organised itinerary to help you make the most of the Spanish capital.

Spend this second day exploring the cultural heart of the Paseo del Prado.

  • Start the day at Plaza de Cibeles and the Palacio de Cibeles, which currently houses the town hall. You can book a tour of the Palacio de Cibeles viewing platform to see the whole area from above.
  • Walk along the Paseo del Prado until you reach the Neptune Fountain, a much-photographed neoclassical monument that you’ll see if you book a guided tuk-tuk tour of Madrid.
  • Continue on to the Prado Museum, where you can see some of the finest works of European art. You can book a guided tour or buy your tickets for the Prado Museum in advance. You can also visit the Prado shop if you’re looking for a souvenir.
  • After your visit, have lunch at one of the restaurants near the Prado Museum.
  • In the afternoon, explore Retiro Park, the city’s green lung. You can book a tour of Retiro Park so you don’t miss the highlights: the Crystal Palace, the Avenue of the Statues, featuring sculptures of Spanish monarchs, and Retiro Lake, which is ideal for watching the sunset.
  • In the evening, a unique option is to enjoy one of the flamenco shows. You can book a flamenco show in Madrid at various historic venues.

The group was a bit large, which made it difficult to hear at times.
