La Gomera's nature is amazing and its beaches, a paradise of turquoise waters, black sand and beautiful palm groves, combined with its mild and pleasant climate all year round, make it an ideal destination to lie in the sun and disconnect from the world. This, together with its mild and pleasant climate all year round, makes it an ideal destination to lie in the sun and disconnect from the world - every traveller's dream!

If you've already explored the interior of the island by hiking in La Gomera, on the coast you'll find beaches of all kinds (virgin, family, quiet...) and for all tastes, so grab your swimming costume and towel to visit the best beaches in La Gomera!

1. Playa del Inglés, a dreamlike sunset

Surprisingly, it is not a very long beach, although there is no doubt that it is one of the most beautiful, due to the contrast between the black volcanic sand, the blue sea and the imposing cliffs that give it a rustic and isolated appearance.

The ocean at this beach is usually calm but there are times when, due to the strong waves, you have to take extreme precautions when bathing to avoid scares. If the sea allows it, you can snorkel a little.

El Inglés beach, located in Valle Gran Rey in the southwest of the island, is one of the most famous beaches on La Gomera. Access by car is easy and on foot it is only a short walk from the car park on the coast.

What to do on the beach

I recommend you to visit El Inglés beach in the afternoon and wait until sun set as it is one of the most beautiful beaches in the Canary Islands.

  • How to get there: GM-2 and GM-1 from San Sebastián de La Gomera (50.1 km).
  • Best time to go: In the afternoon, to see the sunset on the way.
  • Services: It is an unspoilt beach but there are flats, leisure facilities, restaurants and other services nearby.

2. Avalo beach, the most beautiful palm grove on the island

To the north of San Sebastián de La Gomera (in the direction of Puntallana) is the black sandy beach of Ávalo, surrounded by cliffs and green palm groves (one of the most beautiful in La Gomera), a unique landscape that fascinates with its great beauty!

The waters of Ávalo beach are calm and clean, but don't forget to put on some booties because there are areas of gravel and pebbles that could get stuck in your feet.

This beach has the permission of the Town Hall for camping. As it is isolated, it does not offer services but it is perfect if you want to spend a day away from the world, going to bed with the sound of the waves and waking up to a beautiful sunrise. It's magical!

Another reason to visit this place is that near this site there is a small hermitage that keeps the image of the Virgin of Guadalupe, the patron saint of the island.

  • How to get there: Via the CV-2 from San Sebastián de La Gomera (4.3 km).
  • Best time to go: Early in the morning to see the sunrise and the surrounding landscapes.
  • Services: it is an unspoilt beach and therefore has no services.

3. Alojera Beach, in a unique landscape between cliffs

In the east of the island in the town of Vallehermoso, this is one of the most beautiful and extensive volcanic sand beaches of La Gomera, so it is frequented by many people. It can be reached on foot and by car.

Alojera beach is situated in a somewhat isolated rustic environment surrounded by cliffs that stretch all the way to the Atlantic Ocean, giving rise to an amazing landscape. It is a very pleasant place to spend a day outdoors but the waves here are moderate, so when it comes to cooling off in the sea it is advisable to take precautions.

What to do on the beach

If after a while you feel like a stroll around the surrounding area, you can take the car to the Casa de la Miel de Palma, a place where you can learn about the process of making guarapo (a very typical ingredient of Gomeran gastronomy and used in many restaurants on the island) from the time it is obtained from the plant until it is bottled.

And to recover your energy, there's nothing better than eating a good plate of escaldón de gofio at Bodegón Restaurante Agana, one of the best restaurants to eat in La Gomera.

  • How to get there: Via GM-2 and GM-1 from San Sebastián de La Gomera (47.8 km).
  • Best time to go: In the morning to combine a day at the beach with a visit to the Casa de la Miel de Palma.
  • Services: Showers, restaurants and promenade.

4. La Caleta beach, ideal for relaxing with the family

In the north of the island, just a few minutes from the Hermigua Valley, lies La Caleta Beach. A beautiful and quiet beach of black sand with views of the coastline and the Teide volcano.

It is the perfect place to disconnect from your routine, where the only thing you will hear is the sound of the waves, and relaxation is total! La Caleta beach is a great place to go with children and enjoy nature.

What to do on the beach

It also has a beach bar where you can have a drink, which is fantastic if you go there with your family, and it has other services such as parking, toilets and showers.

  • How to get there: Via the GM-1 from San Sebastián de La Gomera (25 km).
  • Best time to go: In the morning to make the most of the day.
  • Services: kiosk-bar, car park, toilets and showers.

5. Playa de Vueltas beach, for those who want a bit of atmosphere

If after so many isolated and unspoilt beaches you are looking for a bit of action on the island, Vueltas beach is usually quite crowded and is a semi-urban beach.

You'll find it in Valle Gran Rey and you'll love its calm waters, black sand and seafaring charm. The fishing boats parked on the sand add a unique and special touch to the landscape, so get your camera out because you'll want to take lots of photos!

As it is protected from the currents, its waves are gentle, so it is ideal for swimming without worries. It also has several services (showers, restaurants, parking) which makes it a very cool beach to enjoy with friends or with the kids all day long. You won't want to leave.

What to do on the beach

At Vueltas beach you can sit on the sand and enjoy the atmosphere, sunbathe, have a swim or go out for a drink in one of the nearby restaurants.

  • How to get there: Via GM-2 and GM-1 from San Sebastián de La Gomera (50 km).
  • Best time to go: All day.
  • Services: restaurants, showers, car park, shops, promenade.

6. La Negra beach, for those looking for intimacy

If you are looking for a secluded spot in La Gomera where you can escape to enjoy a day at the beach like any other Gomeran, I recommend you visit La Negra beach, on the south coast of the island.

This is an isolated and unspoilt beach where you'll find plenty of privacy as not many people usually go there. To get there you have to go via La Rajita beach or from Arguayoda along a path.

You won't find any services here, as it is a virgin beach. However, on the nearby beach of La Rajita there is a beach bar where you can cool off on hot days.

What to do on the beach

A good place to enjoy a refreshing swim in the ocean waters, snorkelling and sunbathing on the black sand until the sun goes down. The sunsets from this beach are truly mesmerising.

  • How to get there: Via GM-1 from San Sebastián de La Gomera (39.3 km).
  • Best time to go: All day.
  • Services: Not available as it is an unspoilt beach.

Any of these beaches will fascinate you, but if you're even more in the mood for nature, you can always book a hiking trip on La Gomera:
