Fuerteventura is one of the best destinations for families with children, given its leisure and cultural offerings. The island has all kinds of activities for all ages, but if you take your children with you, they will also have plenty to do there.
From pirate boat trips to wave pools and nature reserves with wild animals, the little ones will have a great time. So, if you are planning to go to Fuerteventura with children, read on and I will tell you more.
1. Sail the seas on a pirate ship
This activity will make your children remember their trip to Fuerteventura forever. The trip on the pirate ship Pedro Sartaña will let their imaginations run wild for a few hours. Please note that this activity is not suitable for children under 3 years of age.
As if that weren't enough, adults will enjoy not only watching them have fun, but also the views provided by the excursion.
The excursion departs from the Port of Morro Jable, which is easily accessible by car. In addition to the beautiful trip along the coast of Fuerteventura, the boat also offers a dolphin watching tour.
However, it is important to note that, given the freedom of the dolphins, this is not always possible. On the other hand, it is also possible to add water activities, such as snorkelling, to the booking.
What does the pirate boat trip include?
In this activity, both children and adults will learn how to tie knots and perform different sailing manoeuvres. You will also participate in different contests and games with the little ones, with the chance to win one of the prizes.
During the trip, the boat makes several stops so that passengers can take a dip. The booking also includes a typical Canarian lunch on the high seas.
- Price: From £35
- Where: Port of Morro Jable
- Duration: Approximately 4 hours
2. Explore the depths of the sea in a submarine
One of the most impressive activities you can do in Fuerteventura with children is to take a trip on the Subcat Morro Jable. This is a vessel unlike any you have seen before.
The Subcat Morro Jable is one of only three catamaran-submarines in the world. Yes, you read that right. This vessel combines both modes of transport to provide a unique experience.
At the beginning of the trip, you will sail the sea on a catamaran, enjoying the sea breeze in your hair and the incredible views. This makes this part of the activity one of the best boat trips in Fuerteventura.
As you go, you will see the best beaches on the island and you can even take a dip or two. During this part of the excursion, a guide will explain the curiosities and characteristics of the marine fauna and flora in the area.
Delve into the marine world
Once you have finished the catamaran trip, you and the other passengers will board the submarine. This is when the dive begins and the most exciting part of the trip starts.
Through the submarine's windows, you will see the different animals that inhabit the depths of the sea. It is impressive to see them in complete freedom and at such close range. Without a doubt, this is an ideal activity for all members of the family.
3. Visit Acua Water Park
This activity is sure to become a favourite with children, who will have a great time riding all kinds of attractions. Acua Water Park is one of the best water parks in Fuerteventura.
It has attractions for all ages, so don't rule out a visit if you think your children are too young. Without a doubt, it is a perfect plan for those sweltering hot days in Fuerteventura. This way, you can escape the heat while having fun with your family.
One of the most famous attractions and most suitable for families with children is Río Lento. It is a water circuit that is done with floats. For your information, children under one metre tall must wear armbands and be accompanied by an adult. Río Lento's big brother is Río Rápido, a course full of twists and turns that you will navigate on a float.
In addition to the above, another very fun attraction is the wave pool, which imitates the waves of the sea. This pool has different depths, ranging from a minimum of 20 centimetres to a maximum of 2.50 metres. For the more daring, I recommend attractions such as the Zig Zag, the Castle or the Kamikazes. The latter is a set of slides with a height of 14 metres. However, a minimum height of 1.20 metres is required.
What services does Acua Water Park offer?
As for the services offered by Acua Water Park, the park has a restaurant serving fast food such as hot dogs, hamburgers and sandwiches.
There is also an ice cream parlour and a souvenir shop. As a reminder, don't forget to bring sunscreen and hats to protect the little ones from the sun.

- Where: Avenida Nuestra Señora del Carmen, 41, Corralejo, Fuerteventura
- Opening hours: Open every day from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
4. Visit Oasis Wildlife
Oasis Wildlife is an animal reserve located in Fuerteventura, where you can see all kinds of wild animals up close. It is the largest animal rescue centre in the Canary Islands.
The place is perfect for visiting with children, who will be amazed by the African elephants, crocodiles and cheetahs. In the park, you will find all kinds of animals typical of the African continent, such as camels, sea lions, and hippos.
In addition, you will also learn about the processes carried out to save endangered species. Part of the entrance fee goes towards the conservation of some species, so by visiting, you will be contributing to their rescue.
There are also various educational and recreational activities for children. As if that weren't enough, the reserve has a farm with domestic animals and a botanical garden, which is actually the largest in Europe.
- Price: From around £20 for children aged 4 to 11 and £35 for adults. Discounts are available when you buy your ticket in advance on their website.
- Where: Carretera Gral Jandía s/n in the southern part of Fuerteventura.
- Opening hours: Tuesday to Sunday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
5. Learn at the Salt Museum
Perhaps museums are not the perfect place to go with children, especially younger ones. Given the artistic and historical importance of the objects they hold, museums are very strict with their rules. However, children are often unable to comply with these rules.
Nevertheless, there are all kinds of museums and, among them, there are some that are ideal for children, such as interactive museums. One of the most famous interactive museums in Fuerteventura is the Salt Museum.
The Salt Museum is located in the village of Las Salinas del Carmen. It aims to highlight the island's salt-making tradition, recounting interesting facts about this product of great historical importance. Outside the museum, you can see how the salt is obtained, using the same process that has been in place since the 19th century.
- Price: From £6
- Where: Barrio Las Salinas, no. 2
- Opening hours: Monday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
6. Let your children slide down the Corralejo Dunes
Another suggestion for Fuerteventura with children is a visit to the Corralejo Dunes Natural Park, one of the island's great natural treasures.
The drive to the park is easy and incredibly beautiful, with the sea as a backdrop all the way. What's more, this area is home to some of the best beaches in Fuerteventura. So, I suggest you set off first thing in the morning so you can stop and enjoy some of these beaches.
The Corralejo Dunes Natural Park covers a total of 2,600 hectares of dunes that are of great interest to the scientific community, bathed by turquoise waters.
It is a place completely different from anything you have seen before, a paradise that invites peace and relaxation. In the park, you can spot different types of birds. Children will love climbing the dunes and sliding down them as if they were a slide.
Grandes Playas de Corralejo
I also recommend visiting the beaches known as Grandes Playas de Corralejo. Unlike other beaches in the area, the water is usually calm here, making it a safe place for the little ones to swim.
In addition, the Grandes Playas have all kinds of amenities, such as beach bars, parking and public toilets. This makes it the perfect place to spend a sunny day.
If you prefer, there are various companies that organise tours of the Dunas de Corralejo Natural Park. There are all kinds of options, from buggy excursions to quad bike safaris and boat trips.
7. Discover the beautiful Isla de Lobos with your children
The next activity is very close to the previous one. Isla de Lobos gets its name from the sea lions that used to visit the island years ago. However, these animals are no longer present due to fishing in this area of Fuerteventura.
To get to Isla de Lobos from Corralejo, simply head to the pier, where daily boat trips are organised. The journey takes approximately 15 minutes to reach your destination.
Although it is a very small island, it is one of the best things to do in Fuerteventura. In addition, its small size is ideal for children, as it takes less than an hour to walk from one end to the other.
This way, you will avoid complaints from the little ones. Due to its ecological richness, Lobos Island has been declared a National Park and the waters surrounding it are an underwater reserve. As if that weren't enough, it has also been declared a bird protection area. For all these reasons, it goes without saying that it is important to be respectful of the environment during your visit.
What to do on Lobos Island
There is a restaurant on the island, which is run by the only two inhabitants of the place. It offers menus made with fresh local fish. After lunch, I recommend putting on your swimsuit and water shoes and getting ready to swim in the paradisiacal waters that bathe Lobos Island.
As these waters are crystal clear, it is one of the best places to experience snorkelling in Fuerteventura, allowing you to contemplate the marine fauna of the area.
If you are travelling with children who are not too young, I also recommend climbing the La Caldera volcano, which offers the best views of the whole island, allowing you to see both Fuerteventura and Lanzarote.
Finally, there are also organised excursions with water activities, such as paddle surfing and kayaking.
8. Show your children the magical mountain of Fuerteventura
Tindaya Mountain, also known as the Sacred Mountain of Fuerteventura, is a magical place that you must visit during your stay on the island.
It is located in Llano de Esquinzo, in the municipality of La Oliva, and forms part of the Biosphere Reserve. It is 400 metres high and has geographical characteristics that are completely different from those of other mountains.
It is not only worth visiting for its colours, shape and views, but also for the history it hides. Tindaya Mountain has been of great archaeological interest for years, as it houses engravings from the cave age, as well as footprints with centuries of history.
At one time, the island's natives attributed magical properties to the mountain, which is why it is called the Sacred Mountain. Today, it has been declared a Site of Cultural Interest, as well as a Natural Monument and a Point of Geological Interest.
What to see and do on Tindaya Mountain
Here you can see unique species such as the cuernúa, a purple plant typical of the Canary Islands and Morocco. You will also have the chance to see birds such as the Saharan courser and the hubara bustard, as well as shrews and Atlantic lizards.
During your visit to Tindaya Mountain, I recommend you visit the Bailadero de Las Brujas Cave, where rituals were performed centuries ago.
To go on this excursion, you will first need to travel to the village of La Oliva. In addition, if you are going on your own, you will need to request a permit from the Fuerteventura Island Council's Department of the Environment. If you hire a company, they will take care of the paperwork for you.
9. Explore the Ajuy Caves with the little ones
In the Betancuria Rural Park there is an area declared a Natural Monument: the Ajuy Caves. These caves are located in the municipality of Ajuy and are of great importance at the regional level, as they are the first geological formations in the Canary Islands.
They cover a total of 32 hectares and are part of the underwater lava that emerged during the Cretaceous period to give rise to the island.
In fact, they are so valuable that they are one of the 150 sites of greatest geological interest in the world. When you visit them, you will feel like a character in a film about the beginnings of the Earth, given their nature.
What is the excursion to the Ajuy Caves like?
The excursion to the caves starts from the village, which you can reach by car. Once you arrive there, you will have to travel to Ajuy beach, which is about 500 metres from the caves.
I recommend doing this excursion on a sunny day and with plenty of time, so you can stop at the beach for a dip and a drink. Then, follow the path that leads to the caves, full of dunes and lime kilns.
When you reach the caves, the temperature drops a few degrees due to the humidity, so it is advisable to bring some warm clothing. My recommendation is to wait to see the sunset and then head to the village of Ajuy.
10. Explore the best beaches in Fuerteventura
Of course, you can't visit Fuerteventura and miss out on its wonderful beaches. These are the island's main attraction, so I recommend that you experience as many of them as possible.
Going to the beach is one of the favourite activities for children, who have a great time building sandcastles or splashing in the sea. What's more, it doesn't require much planning, just a few sandwiches and sunscreen.
You can also have a great day out by booking one of the kayak trips in Fuerteventura, another fun way to explore the Atlantic waters.
Among the best beaches in Fuerteventura for families with children are Costa Calma, Esmeralda, Los Lagos, Caleta de Fuste and Morro Jable.
