Step by Step

These tickets to the Osaka Castle Museum allow you to explore one of the city’s most iconic landmarks from the inside. The first castle was built by Toyotomi Hideyoshi from 1583 onwards, at the height of the struggle to unify Japan. Following its fall in 1615, the complex was rebuilt by the Tokugawa shogunate and suffered further destruction over the centuries; the current Main Tower was rebuilt in 1931.

Inside, you’ll find a museum spread over eight floors, with exhibitions dedicated to the history of Osaka, the castle’s defensive architecture and the feudal lords who played a leading role in some of the country’s most significant events. You’ll be able to view suits of armour, documents, paintings, weapons and other historical artefacts, as well as exhibitions that are periodically updated to protect the original pieces.

When you reach the eighth floor, one of the highlights of the visit awaits you: the observation deck. From here, you’ll have a panoramic view of Osaka Castle Park and the city – a great opportunity to appreciate the sheer scale of the complex, its moats and its imposing stone walls.

Admission also includes entry to the Toyotomi Ishigaki Museum, situated just a few minutes’ walk from the Main Tower. This area allows you to descend underground to view a section of the original walls built during the reign of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, which were buried when the Tokugawa clan rebuilt the castle in the 17th century.

A visit well worth doing if you’re in Osaka and fancy something cultural without any fuss. The ticket includes more than I’d expected.

It was a good experience, although there were times when it was difficult to move along very quickly due to the number of visitors. The viewing point makes up for it.

A great way to spend a morning. The museum has plenty of information and you can round off your visit by exploring the area around the castle.

I went on my own and found it easy to find my way around inside. I really liked the antique artefacts and the section on the defensive structures.
