Day 1: Discover Budapest’s history, flavours and must-see sights
Start your holiday at an iconic spot
Start at the iconic Gerbeaud, a historic patisserie on Vörösmarty Square that retains its 19th-century style and serves delicacies such as the Dobos cake and the Gerbeaud cake. It’s the perfect place to immerse yourself in the bourgeois atmosphere of old Budapest.
Spend some time at the monument honouring Hungarian Jews
On the banks of the Danube, the Shoes Memorial pays tribute to the Jewish victims of the Second World War. Its symbolism makes it one of the most moving stops on the trip. From here, you can take a cruise on the Danube and see Budapest from a different perspective.
Walk to the Parliament
The Hungarian Parliament Building is the city’s great architectural landmark. Inspired by the Houses of Parliament in London, its interior is steeped in history and splendour. A guided tour is the best way to explore it.
Visit St Stephen’s Basilica
St Stephen’s Basilica, the largest in the country, houses the mummified hand of King Stephen. If you’re a football fan, Ferenc Puskás is also buried here. In December, the square in front of the basilica hosts a lovely Christmas market.
Travel on Europe’s second-oldest metro
Take metro line 1, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with its iconic red metal columns. Get off at Hősök tere to continue your tour.
Stroll around Heroes’ Square and the surrounding area
This monumental square is surrounded by attractions such as the Museum of Fine Arts, Budapest Zoo, Városliget Park and Vajdahunyad Castle. It’s the perfect spot for a stroll and taking some great photos.
Round off your first day in the Jewish quarter
Round off the day with a visit to the Great Synagogue and dinner or a drink at one of the popular ruin bars in the surrounding area, housed in derelict buildings.
Day 2: Enjoy the best views, thermal baths and local flavours
Treat yourself to a sweet breakfast at Cirkusz
Start your day with brunch at Cirkusz Kávéház, famous for its in-house roasted coffee and dishes such as the Egg Royal or homemade granola.
Cross the Chain Bridge
One of the city’s iconic landmarks, the Chain Bridge connects Pest with Buda. Walk across it and take the funicular up to Buda Castle.
Take the best panoramic photos
Visit Buda Castle, Matthias Church and the Fishermen’s Bastion to enjoy the best views of the city. Then head down to the Danube to continue your tour.
Relax at the Széchenyi Thermal Baths
Round off the day at one of Budapest’s historic thermal baths. The Széchenyi is ideal in summer, whilst the Rudas Baths, with their octagonal pool and Ottoman-style ambience, also offer evening sessions.
