Experience Highlights

Glide over the tranquil waters of the Great Sandy Straits Marine Park and watch the sun set behind K'gari (Fraser Island) on this 2-hour sunset cruise. The "Amaroo" catamaran, with three panoramic decks, departs Hervey Bay Marina at 5pm and returns around 7pm.

Upon boarding, you'll receive a glass of sparkling wine and a plate of cold snacks, while the crew share commentary in English about the wildlife that often accompanies the crossing: bottlenose dolphins, green turtles or, if you're lucky, dugongs.

  • Book your place and avoid the queues at the ticket office.
  • Enjoy 360° views from the top deck of the catamaran.
  • Relax with drinks included and discounts for dinner at the Boat Club

Step by Step

At 16:45 h, staff greet passengers at the quayside, scan the digital voucher and give a brief safety briefing before casting off. As soon as the engine pulls away from the pontoon, the water takes on emerald hues and the gentle wind off Sandy Strait cools the deck. The captain sets course for Woody Island or Pelican Bank (depending on the tide), while a local guide points out the historic Urangan Wharf and the migratory routes of the humpback whales that use the bay as a nursery from July to October.

With bubbly drink in hand, you can settle into a hammock on the bow or on the upper deck, perfect for glare-free photos. Season permitting, flocks of terns fly over the wake in search of fish, and the shallow reef reveals spotted rays moving like shadows. The guide invites passengers to keep an eye out: "Dolphins to starboard!" is the signal to raise cameras and hearts.

Halfway through the crossing, the catamaran slows down next to a sandbank where the water turns turquoise. The crew serves a second round of nibbles (local cheddar cheese, olives and crackers), while the sky is ablaze in reds, oranges and purples. The crowning moment comes when the sun's disc skims the silhouette of Fraser Island, painting a golden path over the sea. The silence is broken only by camera clicks and sighs of awe.

Back in the harbour, the lights of the marina reflect on the sheet of water and the crew hand out a discount voucher for dinner or a cocktail at the Boat Club. The evening opens with the gentle rocking of the catamaran as it docks at 7pm, leaving you with the memory of one of Queensland's most famous sunsets.
