Step by Step
During your stay in Vienna, you mustn’t miss a visit to the Albertina Museum, one of the city’s most opulent and highly acclaimed museums. Explore this building and admire works in various artistic styles, such as the Batliner Collection of modern European art, or Impressionist and Post-Impressionist paintings.
This museum houses around 65,000 drawings and approximately 1 million prints. Among these works, you’ll find creations by artists such as Monet, Da Vinci, Klimt, Picasso, Renoir and Degas.
The Albertina Museum was founded in 1776 and, in addition to its extensive collection of prints and drawings, also houses architectural plans and photographs. Its collection is remarkably diverse, ranging from prints by Goya to 120 works by the German painter Dürer and examples of Pop Art.
The Batliner Collection, the museum’s best-known collection, comprises 500 works. You’ll find Impressionist paintings by artists such as Alex Katz, Claude Monet and Paul Cézanne, as well as Fauvist works by Matisse and Expressionist pieces by Kandinsky. Vienna’s imperial and palatial style is also reflected in the décor of the museum’s galleries, as well as in the elegant Hall of the Muses, adorned with chandeliers.
The décor was originallycommissioned by Louis XVI from workshops at the Royal Court in Paris and Versailles, which is why its style is sumptuous and characterised by a striking opulence.
